Holiday Gift Guide for Fanboys & Fangirls

Don't let the snarl in the above photo from the movie 'Hugo' confuse you: Sir Ben Kingsley is nothing like that in real life -- or, at least nothing like that during a 15-minute interview. When Moviefone spoke to the Oscar-winning actor this past week, Kingsley was humble, forthright and excited to discuss his new movie, as well as the joy he got from working with Martin Scorsese. Of course, this being Sir Ben, there's always going to be something interesting to talk about: recent projects of his, critically acclaimed roles he's had, even movies he hasn't been in. From his work on 'Hugo' and 'Gandhi,' to his love of 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind,' to his cameo on 'The Sopranos,' Kingsley gave Moviefone a little taste of what goes on inside the head of an acting legend. To help prepare for this interview, I went back and watched a childhood favorite of mine last night: 'Searching for Bobby Fischer.' Oh, I love that movie. I remember that so clearly on the set of 'Bobby Fischer,' [writer/director] Steven Zaillan handed me the script to 'Schindler's List.' It's funny, going back to 'Fischer,' there are a lot of similarities between that film and 'Hugo' -- in particular, the relationship between chess coach Bruce Pandolfini and iconic filmmaker Georges Melies, both patriarchal figures who've seemingly lost their way. In terms of Melies, did you find it difficult to research the role without having many recordings or interviews of his to go on? What's out there are a box set of films of his that Martin Scorsese gave me. I watched about 90 of his films and saw, with my own eyes, how energetic he was, how skilled he was, how brilliant at multitasking he was, how he broke so many boundaries with film, how inventive he was and, most importantly, how happy he was. And that was a tremendous key to unlocking Georges, because when he's in the toy shop, everything has been taken away from him, and in order to measure how painful his exile was I had to fully appreciate and enjoy and inhabit how glorious his life was when he was at the peek of his fame and power. So my research was very much focused on the joys of his creative life and especially to have one's research continued in flesh and blood, by recreating those films in the glass studio and the joy of that, and then, sadly, having to burn everything for the sake of our movie, Hugo. I must say that those scenes, personally, to film were very distressing and strangely tragic and melancholy, because I was burning beautiful artifacts from our own film set ... I was burning drawings, I was burning weapons and suits of armor. It was a very painful process following my happiness in the glass studio. So I was physically informed by his joy, then the loss of that joy, and then of course his exile in the toy shop. There are no one-on-one interviews of him but there are amazing photographs of him in the toy shop looking utterly forlorn, looking completely lost, unable to smile, almost dead behind the eyes, but some sparkle remaining. In 'Hugo,' there are several scenes where Melies, directs his own films. Did Scorsese allow you to actually direct any of those recreations? Well, with Marty it's always a collaboration. Marty choreographed the basic outlines, but then he allowed me to work within that [and] improvise within that, so I was able to pick out individuals on the set and give them direction, give them notes -- [Scorsese] captured it all with his camera. The wonderful thing about Marty is whatever you offer him, he will use, he will see, he will incorporate into the great massive of footage that he will edit. Very little is wasted with Marty. He sees everything, and that's a wonderful feeling for an actor, to be on the film set and know that whatever you offer the camera, that he will definitely see it. Jude Law's character describes seeing Melies' most famous film, 'A Trip to the Moon,' and being blown away by the visuals. Is there any film that has had that type of effect on you? 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' was an indelible experience for me when I first saw it. The visual resonance of that mountain and the drawings and the obsession of that shape. I remember the mailboxes smashing and rattling backwards and forwards. Spielberg using visual narrative, storytelling with lights -- and Melies was connected to that tradition. [He was] the father of it. Marty is also so much apart of that great tradition of telling stories with lights. This may be tough considering you're actually in 'Hugo,' but I was wondering where you think the film may sit in the Scorsese pantheon, up against some of the greatest mob movies in history. Well, what I learned working with Martin Scorsese on 'Shutter Island' and 'Hugo,' and looking at all his work, he is a maestro in the study of male vulnerability. 'Raging Bull': vulnerable man. 'Casino': vulnerable man. 'Goodfellas': vulnerable man. 'Hugo': the study of a vulnerable man rescued by a child. I can see an absolutely consistent thread and I feel it will fit right in the center, comfortably, of his body of work. Going back to the film that set your movie career in motion, 'Gandhi,' you were 37 years old when you played that role, which ended up winning you an Oscar. Do you ever look back on that time and wonder if you could've handled being thrust into the spotlight at an earlier age, say 27? The thing is, I [had been acting for] 15 years in the theater. And it gave me an appreciation of epic destiny, because I [was] in many Shakespeare plays. It gave me a stamina, it gave me an appreciation of following a unique destiny on an historical landscape, because all of Shakespeares plays are like that. So all I can say is this, honestly without Shakespeare, my performance as Gandhi would not have happened. In 1982, having just won an Oscar for your first major film role, was there a moment where you thought to yourself, 'How can I top this?' Not really [laughs]. I have been fortunate enough to be nominated three extra times, and I feel blessed every time I get up and go to the film set. It's all a surprise for me. It's all a challenge and a surprise and it's beautiful. On a completely unrelated note, I was always curious about your cameo in 'The Sopranos,' where you play yourself. How did that come about? They just asked me, it was great. They had this script that involved the gift suites or whatever they're called. It just happened: they rang my agent and said, would you look at it and give us a few tips. And I got to work with Lauren Bacall! That's something I never thought would happen. She's a wonderful person, I had met her socially but it was wonderful working with her. What a powerhouse. [Photo: Paramount] The Best Movies of 2011 The Best Movies of 201150. 'Breaking Dawn'49. .publish-content img Creating 'Men in Black 3' was trapped with anything else from financial issues to trailer issues. Just like: Will Smith's mega-trailer was expected to move in the SoHo street in Manhattan it had been parked on throughout shooting because of neighbor complaints. The under two-minute tease reminds you against the 'MIB' world -- aliens walk within our midst, Cruz helps it be look "gooood" -- although creating the plot in the threequel: Agent K (Tommy Lee Manley) has truly been "dead in excess of 4 decadesInch (SFX: thunderclap), so Agent J (Cruz) must use time to save him. 'Three Stooges' Trailer: Count the Stupid Gags

Stars put a significant quantity of force on themselves, specially when they are playing a personality that's dark, destructive and apparently not capable of indicating empathy. Charlize Theron did this in 2003's 'Monster,' using the portrayal of murderer Aileen Wournos (a job that won her an Oscar), and she or he will it again in 'Young Adult' (in limited release on Friday). Inside a roundtable discussion using the Hollywood Reporter -- which incorporated stars Glenn Close, Michelle Williams, Carey Mulligan, Octavia Spencer and Viola Davis -- Theron and Close spoke concerning the impossibility of playing unsavory figures on the watch's screen. "I believe are looking for a location where one can love your character to complete them justice, if you are knowing them, that separation can have,Inch stated Close, who notoriously performed stalker Alex Forrest in 'Fatal Attraction.' So, in the event that's the situation, wouldso would she approach playing probably the most evil people ever, Adolf Hitler? Close's answer was a little curt, explaining that Hitler wasn't someone you can sympathise with. Theron, however, were built with a different perspective. I simply think, individuals are so concerned when you checked out a monster, which you may find a person. There is this excellent story I discovered after i did my research for 'Monster,' concerning the guy who initially emerged with profiling serial murders ... He thinks that fables, that werewolves and Dracula and all sorts of these frightening figures, were produced because individuals don't wish to think that people can handle bad things, so we have produced this type of fantasy world where individuals things exist, since it can not be in us. We can handle some shit which will scare you, because of the right conditions. Which means you take ... Hitler. You need to be brave enough to express that he's a person, as well as on that much cla, many of us are like him, also it does not mean you are saying what he did was right. But, you gotta admit that he's in the same breed as many of us. Therefore it needs to cause you to conscious that because of the right conditions, you will find steps you can take that you won't want to believe you are able to do. Which is what's interesting for me personally and my work ... It is the items that scares you a bit: Let's say I've found something about this guy which i could really have empathy with? Most stars may likely avoid playing a personality as dark as Hitler, but Theron appears up for that challenge (or at best she'd know how to pull off it if she recognized this type of role). You can view the whole roundtable, where 2011's "It" stars discuss their careers, below. Theron's 'Young Adult' opens countrywide 12 ,. 16. The Muppets Are Brainwashing Your Children, According to Fox News

Obtain a pitchforks ready -- people wackos in Hollyweird are trying to brainwash your children into thinking terrible evil things. Employing their agents of propaganda, they are attempting to corrupt an entire generation of impressionable audiences with false information, to be able to lead numerous future in to a dangerous decline. Parents take heed: to guard your children, you should not bring them to find out 'The Muppets' it could appear like holiday comedy for the whole family, an attempt to carry on this content and spirit of the creator Jim Henson, but that is mere deceptiveness. It is ammunition designed to trick your children into believing that the oil industry -- by proxy capitalism and America -- is evil. You'll be able to thank the truly amazing people at Fox Business Report for notifying many of us for his or her dastardly motivation. Since there's clearly few other economic news important enough to cover, 'Follow the Money' host Eric Bolling spoken with Serta Gainor in the Media Research Center, and asked for the question that must definitely be asked for: "Is liberal Hollywood using class warfare to brainwash our kids?In . And the answer then is a resounding "YES!" Inside the new 'Muppets' movie, Chris Cooper stars as Tex Richman, an oil baron who expects to eliminate the famous Muppet theater and drill for your precious oil percolating underneath. More youthful crowd expects to spend the Muppets title and re-package them for many low-existence Reno troublemakers as they thinks that individuals live in a "hard, cynical world" plus it warrants a "hard, cynical act." And 'The Muppets' gets the gall to imply they're under admirable qualities. As Bolling and Gainor explain, the film may trick you into believing that an undesirable lust web hosting wealth is it possible to leave morally bankrupt, do not purchase it! 'The Muppets' -- like previous children's entertainment including 'Captain Planet,' Nickelodeon's 'Big Eco-friendly Help' and 'Syriana' -- is trying to trick your boy or daughter into thinking capitalism is not good. Tex Richman can be a effective businessman, and like Bolling reminds you, we have to admire people people. Even though Richman coldly reflects his wealth inside the Muppets' faces after they request him for leniency, you shouldn't believe that someone with wealth would will not be charitable. (Cheap Bolling made his fortune round the NY Mercantile Exchange, purchasing and selling oil among other activities, isn't associated with his motivation if you're just prone to use that "fact" to question his "objectivity" you'll have the ability to visit the initial bus to Cuba.) Oil, that ever-lasting center in the the planet, provides an endless volume of good stuff concerning the America people if children believe the lies of 'The Muppets,' they may develop while using absurd notion that might be unwanted effects for the oil business. Since you've had how well you see opened up up, don't think that's lost. There's still appropriate entertainment you'll be able to inform your kids this holidays, like 'Alvin as well as the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked,' -- which coincidentally may also be produced with the Fox corporation. It's kind of funny the film that poses the finest financial threat for the potential audience of 'Alvin as well as the Chipmunks' same with really pessimism for the child it's an optimistic factor the employees from the organization were brave enough to point this fact regarding competition. Ratings Pit Of Debt: CBS CSI: NY Hits Low, NBCs Family Film Tanks Wheres Grimm?

Before we checked on Grimm a couple of days just before the Christmas, the rookie NBC drama made an appearance being bottoming out, holding steady week-to-week to avoid its publish-premiere slide. Nevertheless the fairytale procedural was benched once for your holiday, that's understandable, and however last evening for original movie Wager In Your Existence, which is not a great deal. Last evening, the newest in the Procter & Gamble/Walmart-funded family movies that air on NBC as time buys came a meager .5/2 in grownups 18-49 from 8-10 PM and two.2 million audiences. It's tied since the least expensive-rated such movie to air on NBC on Friday or Saturday, in- or off-season. The very first, Methods From The Mountain, averaged a good 1.3/5 in 18-49 and 7.8 million audiences in April 2010. The Jensen Project released a .9 and three.9 million in summer season 2010. Both broadcast on Friday. Section Of Vision (.5/2, 2.7 million) together with a stroll Throughout My Shoes (1.3/4, 4.9 million) broadcast on Saturday the 2009 summer season. To keep airing people movies, NBC undoubtedly is generating money at about the time buys (and let’s be realistic, it’s much less NBC has cabinets stacked with originals carrying out a brutal fall filled with cancellations). However’d question the organizing selection for Wager In Your Existence, which stretches unnecessarily the hiatus from the newcomer series so early into its run. With Dateline (1./3, 4 million) at 10 PM, NBC finished fourth for your evening in 18-49. CBS’ dramas released wall-to-wall declines airing against Fox’s coverage in the Pac-12 Championship Game. A Gifted Guy (1.2/4, 8 million) was lower a tenth in 18-49, CSI: NY (1.4/4, 9.8 million) was lower 18% with a series low, and Blue Bloods (1.6/5, 11 million) was lower 20%. Inside the fast excellent, CBS (1.4/4, 9.6 000 0000) is tied for No. 1 round the evening in 18-49 with Fox and Univision, but Fox’s amounts are approximate because the ratings for the sport aren't time-modified. ABC broadcast Extreme Transformation: Home Edition at 8 PM (1.1/4, flat) at 9 PM (1.3/4), lower 13%, and 20/20 (1.3/4) at 10 PM. The CW’s Supernatural (.7/2, 1.9 million) was steady, while Nikita (.5/2, 1.7 million) was lower a tenth inside the demo.

First Look at Daniel Day-Lewis as Steven Spielberg's Eerily Accurate Lincoln

Steven Spielberg couldn’t be at the AFI Fest premiere of The Adventures of Tintin because he was filming Lincoln in Virginia — and now we know that the Lincoln production process is a completely-effing-serious one. Not only does star Daniel Day-Lewis look remarkable as Lincoln in this new candid photo, but Variety’s Jeff Sneider Tweeted a report that he “hasn’t broken his Lincoln accent since March” and his “real name doesn’t even appear on the call sheet.” That is commitment. And insanity. And the new photo will haunt you like a specter in Ford’s Theatre. Twitter user @UVAMichael posted the photo of Day-Lewis at a local restaurant wearing full Lincoln face and decidedly un-Lincoln Dungarees. In case you need to be reminded what our 16th president looks like, here’s the real thing: Sally Field’s still playing Mary Todd Lincoln, Jared Harris was just added as Ulysses S. Grant, and the rest of the cast includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tommy Lee Jones, David Strathairn, John Hawkes, James Spader, Lee Pace, Jackie Earle Haley, Michael Stuhlbarg, Hal Holbrook, Walton Goggins, Bruce McGill, Tim Blake Nelson, David Oyelowo, Joseph Cross and David Costabile. Find something there if you like. See you at the 2013 Oscars, Great Emancipator. First Look: Daniel Day-Lewis as Steven Spielberg’s Abraham Lincoln [The Film Stage]

Michael Jackson Biopic May Be in Works Awesome Bookie Puts The Actor-kaira Pitt Atop Casting Pool

Among the heap of speculative projects idling inside the landfill also called Hollywood, a Michael Jackson biopic has extended been one thought likeliest being reclaimed. Now, really, comes word the late pop icon’s estate is at discussions with Ivan Reitman’s Montecito Picture Company to nudge this kind of project forward. Not to be surpassed, an Irish bookie getting a proven fascination with most likely probably the most outlandish cultural wagers imaginable has commenced casting speculation inside an inspired — very inspired — fashion. To start with, have a very generously sized a dose of skepticism handy. Now choke it lower, chased while using morning beverage of your choosing (ideally whiskey). After which it browse Tuesday’s dispatch from Variety, in which the King of Pop’s estate is mentioned to own approached Reitman and partner Tom Pollock about getting “certain periods in the late singer’s existence” for the screen. Pollock told the trade that although talks have happened, there's nothing close to locked indeed, there is no evidence of a script, treatment or anything beyond the impossible imagine an approved Michael Jackson feature that could go a long way for the family members, fans and casual filmgoers alike. But! Top Chef: Just Desserts' Sally: I Don't Regret Having Orlando Make My Showpiece

Sally Johnny Iuzzini kept criticizing Sally Camacho for having sous chef Orlando make her showpiece, but she doesn't think that cost her the Top Chef: Just Desserts win. "I fell short on my plated dessert and if I had executed what I had planned, I would have won," Camacho tells TVGuide.com. The pastry chef couldn't finish off her spheres as she planned in the end. How did she run of time? Find out. Plus: See what else she had to adjust on the fly.Top Chef: Just Desserts' Chris: It was important for me to do everything myselfWhat were you thinking when Gail announced Chris as the winner?Sally Camacho: I was overjoyed with relief that it was finally over. I was saddened also because, of course, I wanted to win. But I was still happy for Chris. He is definitely very talented, as is Matthew. It seemed like they were torn between you and Chris. Was that the case?Sally: During Judges' Table, I felt that. We have similar experiences in competition. We have both competed in the National Pastry Team Championship, which has very similar criteria to the finale's [challenge]. I have only competed nationally, but Chris competed in Worlds and won.Do you think it was the fact that you didn't make your showpiece that cost you the win?Sally: I do not feel that that was the case. I feel that I fell short on my plated dessert and if I had executed what I had planned, I would have won. I was very confident in my flavors and composition of all my items. In anytrue pastry competition, flavor is the majority of the points scale and whoever scores highest on flavor wins, so I focused all my energy on that because that is what I stand for and am highly regarded for. I wish I could see the judging points scale if there was one. Were you surprised at how much Johnny harped on the showpiece? And when you assigned Orlando to do it, did you think it would be such an issue?Sally: I was surprised that Johnny did harp on that so much. I knew having Orlando make the piecemight be an issue, but I felt that was the best strategy for me - using my sous chefs at their best. In competition, that is what you do to win. In any given sport, you place your people at what they do best to win, even if that means stepping back.Top Chef: Just Desserts' Matthew: I felt like the odd man outDo you regret having him make the whole showpiece?Sally: No, I do not. I did work on the piece; they just don't show that. Things happened in the kitchen that made me sacrifice my time on certain things. I did need my sous chefs to step up for me so I could rectify the situation. Like I said, I put all my energy on the food. What happened with your plated dessert that you were so pressed for time?Sally: I am known for plated desserts and I was definitely ambitious. I had planned to seal my spheres and glaze them. Everything was ready and all my tools were set in their place, but what I didn't have was time. The kitchen is also huge, so a third of your time is used running back and forth. Do you think you should've been given more time for it?Sally: Twenty minutes to make the plated dessert of your life and to win $100,000 -I felt was not enough. I wish we had 30 minutes. I knew that once I started building my dessert and seven minutes were gone, I had to think, "What can I edit without affecting the end flavor?" So I cut the aesthetics, but the flavor was still great. What happened with your entremets? How much time did you lose fixing it?Sally: Oh my! I had just grabbed one of the fleximold inserts for my entremets and didn't think to measure it.I just started to build it. Once I went to build the final montage of my entremet, my insert was too small. This,I know in competition and judging criteria, would be unacceptable. I quickly made the decision to remake my entire entremet, [so] I lost so much time the first day. Also,I looked to my sous chefs for support, so Orlando did have to take the reins on the showpiece so I can make the right food. Also, my bonbon was going to be two layers - caramel on top and salted milk chocolate on the bottom - but with the time being against me, I made the bonbon one layer, with all the combined flavors. That was a sacrifice also.Top Chef: Just Desserts' Orlando: I'm sorry if I came off as the villainThe cast seemed really close this season. Who do you still keep in touch with?Sally: Orlando, for sure. We text every day and talk often during the week. We were close from Day One.All the Fantastic Five, of course: [us], Carlos, Chris and Matthew. Also, Craig, Amanda, Vanarin and Nelson. What's next for you? Are you still at WP24?Sally: Next is focusing on my competition in Madrid this coming January. I won the Valrhona C3 National competition and will be representing the Americas in the world competition in 2012. I am still with the Wolfgang Puck Co. and am currently opening the Hotel Bel Air. The future is very open and who knows what it will bring. Funny, I hear talks of having my own show. Who knows? ... I am still focused on competing.

Morning Grind: Mickey Rourke Had Some Issues With 'Iron Man 2'

Mickey Rourke was in Los Angeles over the weekend doing press for 'Immortals' (check for Moviefone's sit-down with Rourke closer to release), and when the subject of onscreen villains arose, the Oscar nominee had some pretty strong opinions about his heavy from 'Iron Man 2.' "I try to find the moments where [the villain is] not that cliched, evil bad guy and it's a big fight," he told Coming Soon. "I had it on 'Iron Man' and they won. It was going to work for Marvel and them breaking [Jon] Favreau's balls and wanting just a one-dimensional villain. The performance and all the things that I tried to bring to it end up on the f-cking floor. That can cause you not to care as much. To not to want to put that effort in to try and make it an intelligent bad guy or a bad guy who is justified in what his reasons are." [Coming Soon] It's the 'Elizabethtown' reunion you never wanted! Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst will co-star in 'Cities' with Clive Owen and 'Slumdog Millionaire' game-show host Anil Kapoor. Directed by Roger Donaldson ('Dante's Peak,' 'Species'), the film is a "cautionary tale of greed and ambition" in the lead-up to the market crash of 2008. Think 'Babel' mixed with 'Margin Call.' [Coming Soon] James Gandolfini is negotiating to appear in the comedy 'Burt Wonderstone,' opposite Steve Carell and Jim Carrey. The film is about an aging Las Vegas magician (Carell) who teams with his old partner to take on an outlandish street magician (Carrey). Gandolfini would play Carell's boss, a billionaire casino owner; per Variety, Olivia Wilde and Sarah Silverman are being sought for the female lead. [Variety] What was an offer last week is now a deal: creepy 'Killing' star Joel Kinnaman has signed to play Lancelot in 'Arthur & Lancelot.' [THR/Heat Vision] "I gave him my idea about how this should be turned into a love story and he's really run with it," said James Cameron to Deadline about Shawn Levy's development of the 'Fantastic Voyage' remake. Cameron's plan to refresh up the 1966 film was to have a doctor inject himself into his dying wife in an attempt to save her. [Deadline] Some Academy Awards deck-chair shuffling: Sony Classics will run the four leads from 'Carnage' (Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, John C. Reilly and Christophe Waltz) in the supporting categories, while the studio will place Keira Knightley in the competitive Best Actress field for her work in 'A Dangerous Method.' Which Old Movie Stars Ranked on Forbes' List of 2011's Top-Grossing Dead Celebrities?

Dead people are arguably less productive than you are, but a bunch of them earned between seven and nine figures for doing nothing this year, according to Forbes. Insulted? I understand. But you may be surprised by which screen stars are still banking well after they’ve left the big screen and the planet. I’ve highlighted the movie stars for you. 1. Michael Jackson: $170 million 2. Elvis Presley: $55 million 3. Marilyn Monroe: $27 million 4. Charles Schulz: $25 million 5. John Lennon: $12 million 5. Elizabeth Taylor: $12 million 7. Albert Einstein: $10 million 8. Dr. Seuss: $9 million 9. Jimi Hendrix: $7 million 9. Stieg Larsson: $7 million 9. Steve McQueen: $7 million 9. Richard Rodgers: $7 million 13. George Harrison: $6 million 13. Bettie Page: $6 million 13. Andy Warhol: $6 million Let’s put aside Elvis Presley, since I doubt that much of his fortune is coming from Viva Las Vegas and Change of Habit. Marilyn Monroe’s iconic pucker is always worth a bunch, so that’s no surprise, and Elizabeth Taylor’s White Diamonds perfume provides an everlasting splash of income. It’s Steve McQueen and Bettie Page who deserve a second look here: McQueen’s image has been licensed for high-end brands like Dolce & Gabbana, and Bettie Page’s estate is scoring off her Bettie Page Clothing stores in Hollywood and Las Vegas. Is it weird that I had no idea McQueen’s appeal is recognizable to a high-end consumer? Or most consumers in 2011? I never hear his films discussed — not even the awesome ones like The Getaway. I’m glad that he’s a bankable persona, but I’m puzzled. He was last namedropped in a Sheryl Crow single about nine years ago, you know what I mean? Former Agent Sue Mengers Dies

Sue Mengers, one of Hollywood's most influential and colorful agents, died October 15 at her home in Beverly Hills after a series of small strokes. Her death was first reported by Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter in a blog post at VanityFair.com. Mengers, who claimed to be 78 although some sources list her age as 81, was surrounded by her friends Ali MacGraw, Joanna Poitier and Boaty Boatwright, Carter wrote. Mengers, who at her peak in the '70s represented such stars as Barbra Streisand,Bob Fosse, Michael Caine, Peter Bogdanovich, Ryan O'Neal and Faye Dunaway, blazed a trail for women agents in Hollywood. PHOTOS: Hollywood's Notable Deaths The child of German refugees, she began her career as a receptionist at MCA talent agency before being hired as a secretary at the William Morris Agency. She would go on to become an agent in 1967 at Creative Management Agency, which merged with International Famous Agency in 1975 to become ICM. Mengers stepped down from ICM in 1986, returned to two years later for a brief stint at WMA, before permanently retiring. "Her name became synonymous with women and what she helped us all to accomplish," said Boaty Boatwright, a talent agent at ICM and one of Mengers' closest friends, "but her legend is really the vitality with which she lived life, and her wit, which will be celebrated in stories throughout our community for years to come." Famous for her sharp, often caustic wit and her star-studded dinner parties, the larger-than-life Mengers was the inspiration for the character played by Dyan Cannon in the 1973 comedy mystery The Last of Sheila, co-written by Anthony Perkins, who was another of her clients. "When she wound her career down in the '80s, Agent Sue became Hostess Sue-and she was even more successful in her new vocation. Dinner at Sue's was like stepping into a Hollywood you imagined, but almost never experienced," Carter recalled. Looking back on her career in a 1993 Los Angeles Times profile, Mengers said, "Emulating the people I knew in the field--entirely male--I was tactless, contemptuous and made enemies needlessly. If I had to do it over again, I'd take on a bit more of the personality of (Paramount motion picture chief) Sherry Lansing, who has the ability to make people feel good. I rolled in there like a tank . . . but in any revolution you have to do something to get their attention. Women don't have to act like that these days." Her husband, director Jean-Claude Tramont, who she married in 1973, died in 1996. Related Topics Obituaries

Pete Travis and Alex Garland set the record straight over Dredd

On Friday The LA Times broke the story that Dredd director Pete Travis was no longer working on the project and that writer/producer Alex Garland had taken on editing duties. However, an official update from both parties claims that's not actually what's happened.According to them, it's just all gone a bit "unorthodox" and been "misinterpreted"."During all stages of the filmmaking, Dredd has been a collaboration between a number of dedicated creative parties," read the statement released by both Travis and Garland."From the outset we decided on an unorthodox collaboration to make the film. This situation has been misinterpreted. To set the record straight, Pete was not fired and remains a central part of the collaboration, and Alex is not seeking a co-director credit."The clarification goes on to say, "We are all extremely proud of the film we have made, and respectfully suggest that it is judged on viewing when it's released next year."Now that sounds more orthodox.Dredd is based on the 2000AD comic strip about a futuristic lawman and the film opens 21 September 2012.

The spin on stats

Attached to the wealth from the film "Moneyball," the NY Occasions went a present business piece identifying exactly what it recognized to as "Generation Moneyball" -- youthful Master of economic administration types smitten by Michael Lewis' book and the thought of using statistics to "exploit issues, allocate assets and challenge the typical understanding."Despite hostility toward science in a few political quarters, there's appeal in this perception of better -- or maybe more productive -- dealing with new techniques for utilizing data, in from fixing crime to greater understanding and anticipating media and cultural trends. Yet ultimately have moved into a time period of virtually infinite data, lots of it's suspect, and making sense of the chaos frequently appears well beyond our grasp.Naturally, it has not dissuaded media shops from pursuing such large-picture tales and corporations from attempting to make use of the Web's treasure chest of understanding to unearth the next Large Factor. Indeed, each day seems to produce a completely new player pitching breakthrough technology regarding social media, wanting to find out itself becoming an arbiter in the public pulse. This look for meaning, however, frequently doesn't survive close scrutiny. Proceed and take survey through which almost another of U.S. participants mentioned they designed to watch the Emmys (overstating the specific rating having a factor around 10), or other putting fascination with Comedy Central's Charlie Sheen roast far while watching "two and a half Males" premiere -- which outdrew it ratings-wise by greater than four to at least one.Over-worked after we are, the media were not especially good at going through this lot of ancillary data and separating what's truly significant from what essentially sounds interesting, and what's essentially meaningless. The Wall Street Journal, for example, gave considerable play with a story about "decoding" the conversation on Twitter. Stating "the scientific appetite for your go through the information can yield," the paper reported an professional saying what exactly could be culled from people 140-character bursts is "the very best customer research tool."Twitter unquestionably has value just like a communication medium, though altering that in to a apparent referendum on virtually anything remains questionable. Due to the limits the format imposes, there's ample room for skepticism about having the ability to yield identifiable designs, except possibly for everybody their have to reshape its chorus of voices in to a marketable product.Others, for instance TiVo, may also be attempting to package their databases into something they could sell. It's another permutation on spinning ratings, which now includes such elements as postponed Dvr viewing plus much more detailed audience profiles, for instance ABC's recent news release offering its performance among "trendy groups, including high-earnings professionals or managers and people with four-plus years of college."Or, reading through through involving the lines, "Hey entrepreneurs, less many people seen us, nevertheless the best ones did." If this involves the zeitgeist, scientific understanding as a means of thwarting evil has furthermore taken a next factor forward. CBS' intriguing new series "Person of great interestInch relies on a device in a position to spitting out vaguely predictive data inside the war against terror, moving the sci-fi of "Minority Report" in to a present-day milieu.Ultimately, the allure of analyzing reams of come up with research is dependant on achieving a sense of security not readily associated with creative endeavors. The primary challenge is separating what's true real-world implications from pointing nonsense -- namely, opt-in polls, immediate online comments together with additional information that could fill time on cable news but which are only connected with whatever yahoo happened striking "send" the fastest. Although "Moneyball" focuses on baseball, since the Occasions piece noted, for professionals receptive to new techniques of mining data, "it's a short answer to using similar concepts in their own personal organizations" -- a workout that could gain momentum as generation x ascends the business ladder.Just like a Jewish mother might say, it couldn't hurt. However when she eventually ends up getting a effective boy or daughter, she could also explain how when push involves shove, have confidence in stomach and swing for your fences. 'American Horror Story' Brings the Haunting Home

NEW YORK (AP) Just when you needed it, the FX network is throwing "American Horror Story" at you.To judge from its first two episodes, it's a robust diversion from the real-life droughts and hurricanes, joblessness and political stalemate that were already giving you the willies. It aspires to be "The Shining"-meets-"Rosemary's Baby," with "Carrie" and "Don't Look Now" tossed in. But more than a dead-on horror show, it's a homage to cinematic spookery. And a good one.In short, "American Horror Story" doesn't really scare you. It just gets in your head. The big unknown: Is it wily enough to stay there, week after week?Alert: Spoilers coming up which is another way of saying you might just as well apply the time you'd spend reading this to watching the premiere (which airs Wednesday at 10 p.m. EDT), then making up your own mind. You'll find it a memorable experience, at least. From the fertile imaginations of Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk ("Glee," ''Nip/Tuck"), "American Horror Story" has a premise that is simple and time-honored: A haunted house is occupied by a likable, remarkably unsuspecting family.Ben Harmon (played by Dylan McDermott) is a Boston psychiatrist who has been caught cheating by his wife, Vivien (the wonderful Connie Britton of "Friday Night Lights"). She already was reeling from a late-term miscarriage. They need to make a fresh start. They and their teenage daughter, Violet (Taissa Farmiga) pull up stakes and head cross-country for Los Angeles."This place is our second chance," Ben tells Vivien, whose forgiveness he desperately seeks if for no other reason than because she hasn't slept with him for almost a year. This place, the family's new homestead, is a looming "classic L.A. Victorian from the 1920s," according to the real-estate agent showing them around. But it seems more like a vestige of "Monster Chiller Horror Theater," a domicile whose past residents have, of course, died gruesomely.Sold! If the elements of this horror story seem second-nature (there are also creaking doors and jars of icky lab specimens in the basement), they take the form of striking imagery that, at times, makes them as unsettling as they are familiar. It need hardly be mentioned that the house, restored from its previous ramshackle condition, retains disturbing artifacts upon which the Harmons will stumble. For example, a fetishist's vinyl bodysuit, complete with hood, is found hanging in the attic, with kinky consequences. The house also comes with strange neighbors. Jessica Lange plays Constance, a busybody Southern belle with an even more intrusive daughter, Adelaide, who (like Jamie Brewer, portraying her splendidly) has Down syndrome. Adult but childlike, the irrepressible Adelaide keeps busting into the Harmon's home."Addie will always find a way in," Constance tells Vivien matter-of-factly. "She has a bug up her ass about this house. Always has."With his practice set up in the family home, Dr. Harmon's ill-advised first client is a teen psychopath (Evan Peters), who bonds with the Harmons' troubled daughter after they meet cute (if bizarrely) in the bathroom, where she's cutting herself. That's not all the weirdness in store. Did we mention Moira, the longtime housekeeper (played by Frances Conroy, past matriarch of "Six Feet Under")? She's the sort of spectral figure who warns these new owners that the house "has a personality; feelings. Mistreat it and you'll regret it."But Ben sees Moira another way. Spinsterish, middle-aged Moira appears to him as "Moira, Jr." (played by Alexandra Breckenridge), a sexy young temptress with a scanty French-maid outfit and a come-on look. This problematic illusion sparks the premiere's raciest interlude. Emerging nude from the shower, Ben spies Young Moira alone in a bedroom pleasuring herself. Inflamed by the vision, he retreats to another room, still in the buff, where, moaning and whimpering, he gets himself off vividly.Speaking of flames, the house seems to impose pyromania on those who inhabit it. Just consider former resident Larry Harvey (played by Dennis O'Hare), who a while back incinerated his entire family, then emerged with grotesque scars from the inferno he set.Could such an incident repeat itself with the Harmons? Ben, suddenly seized by the urge to strike matches while sleepwalking, seems, under the house's spell, to be a firebug in the making. The premiere dumps a number of major questions on the audience, including the most fundamental: Why do the Harmons stick around in this crazy house? By the end of the second episode, Vivien is already fed up. She's ready to vacate. And no member of the audience would argue with her.So who knows what the future will bring for "American Horror Story"? Can it continue to jolt and engage the audience? Will the rationale for keeping the Harmons chilled in their macabre manse be sufficient to keep viewers coming back every week?Copyright 2011 Associated Press. All rights reserved. Hugh Jackman: Real Steel Is The First Of My Movies My Kids Like

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Hugh Jackman has finally made a film that gets the stamp of approval from his two children. The actor might be best known for playing X-Mens Wolverine (in movies that son Oscar, 11, daughter Ava, 6, have yet to see), but Hughs kids are all about giant boxing robots. This is the first time theyve really connected with one of my films. I dont let them watch X-Men, Hugh told Access Hollywood at the Real Steel junket in Los Angeles on Saturday. Most of the time they dont really ask me much about my job. They come on set, but its just dad, its normal, he continued. This is the first time they were like, We love this! And they wanna take their friends. They have all the action figures. My son sleeps with Adam the robot. Hugh said that his sons love of the Real Steel script helped seal the deal on him doing the movie. I read this script for the first time with my son I was like being a bad parent and instead of reading Tintin, I read Real Steel and my son made me read it to him for the next 10 nights, he explained. So, I knew we were on to a winner then. Hugh also chatted with Access about his recent WWE appearance where he was seen going Real Steel on wrestler Dolph Zigglers face. It is scripted entertainment, but I gotta tell you, what goes on in that ring is real! he told Access. [Dolph] is looking at me saying, You hit me man! He goes, Dont you embarrass me out there. So I take direction well. But did Hugh fracture Dolphs jaw as the wrestler claimed on Twitter following the September 19 event? I think hes exaggerating. Dolph likes to exaggerate, Hugh said with a smile. I did send him a case a beer afterwards. In Australia we have a beer after we fight. Real Steel bashes its way into theaters on October 7. Damaged Glass

A PW Productions Ltd and Tricycle London Productions presentation of the play in 2 functions by Arthur Burns. Directed by Iqbal Khan.Phillip Gellburg - Antony Sher Sylvia Gellburg - Tara Fitzgerald Dr Harry Hyman - Stanley Townsend Margaret Hyman - Caroline Loncq Harriet - Suzan Sylvester Stanton Situation - John Protheroe Arthur Burns notoriously authored an excellent play about American-Jewish assimilation. Regrettably, where that play, "Dying of the Salesperson," treated its subject obliquely with fascinating ambiguity, his 1994 go back to the subject "Damaged Glass" is thuddingly literal. That's certainly the sense shipped by Iqbal Khan's dismayingly heavy-handed West Finish production. A married Jewish couple in Brooklyn in 1938 have hit an emergency. Philip Gellburg (Antony Sher) would go to see his old friend Dr. Hyman (nicely swaggering Stanley Townsend) because he's frightened. His wife Sylvia (Tara Fitzgerald) has all of a sudden found herself paralysed both metaphorically and literally through the disasters she has been reading through about in Nazi-controlled Germany following Kristallnacht -- hence the play's title. Hyman, by their own admission, isn't any psychoanalyst, but his friendship and convenient medical training allow Burns to solve crucial, covered-up difficulties inside the marriage. Both Philip and Sylvia undergo bewilderment and denial about themselves, their relationship as well as their link with their Judaism before wholly foreseeable (melo)dramatic climax where they achieve sudden complete insight. Absorbing because these ideas ought to be, the written text reads much better than it plays, specifically in so serious a staging. Even though production received strong reviews in the initial 2010 outing in the Tricycle theater, its almost wholly recast West Finish transfer has been doing it couple of if any favours. The only holdover in the first outing is Sher within the central role of Philip. Possibly so that they can fill a bigger West Finish house, Sher quivers with anguish in the start with Philip's blind self-absorption already at virtual breaking-point. Thus the greater his fear and self-loathing develops, greater it might be to look at. This level of overt display fatally works against audience connection. Philip informs Hyman that he's unable to express themself rapidly, a line Sher takes very literally. His shateringly slow delivery also highlights his have a problem with the accent, an issue bizarrely shared through the entire company. The result is much like hearing a lot of industrious performers whose intonation keeps sliding off-key. One of the new cast, Fitzgerald costs best as Sylvia, most famously because she underplays her character's trauma. But even her jobs are sandbagged by Khan's overemphatic direction and leaden pacing of both moments and, most importantly, the transitions, which following Miller's directives are supported by cello. Grant Olding's alternately anxious and elegiac music is well-performed but every signal makes its point two times, further slowly destroying the already distended evening of momentum.Sets and costumes, Mike Britton lighting Matthew Eagland seem, Erectile dysfunction Borgnis music, Grant Olding production stage manager, Lizzie Chapman. Phoebe Tonkin The Key Circle's Faye might be labeled the show's resident bad girl, but star Phoebe Tonkin demands that's she just misinterpreted. Faye's mother Beginning (Natasha Henstridge) may be the primary reason Faye struggles with morality. "Faye's mother isn't the most 'good' character on the program, and that is the only real type of mentor that she's had becoming an adult," Tonkin states. "There's a little of the energy struggle between the pair of them when Faye begins recognizing her mother is not who she appears. There's likely to be a little of the moral dilemma and she'll either digital rebel or get together together with her.Inch Satisfy The Secret Circle's secret coven of ghouls Tonkin states that Faye has completely different associations with each one of the literally effective youthful women on the program. "Melissa is her partner," Tonkin states. "She's very accustomed to bossing Melissa around and doing what she informs her, but once we explore the series, Melissa will get a little well informed.Inch Tonkin calls Diana, who Faye has known ever since they were small children, the the complete opposite of her and labels her the "goody-goody" from the group. "The many other figures are worried using the energy and duties and Faye can't realise why nobody else realizes that we are these 16-year-old youngsters with witch forces. How isn't that the best factor on the planet?Inch As the initial episodes target the ghouls fine-tuning their abilities, Tonkin states the series will ultimately explore the circle's connections towards the past. "You will find people who want this energy removed from us and we'll see exactly what the elderly of witches' intentions are. There is a whole backstory by what happened towards the parents who died whenever we were really youthful," she states. "Everyone's likely to change sides.
